Gunman killed in shootout near Israeli embassy in Jordan

A shootout happened near the Israeli embassy in Amman, the capital of Jordan. One gunman was killed and three policemen were injured. A local security source and state media reported this information on Sunday.

A gunman first opened fire on a patrolling police team near the Israeli embassy in Amman's Rabiyah area, state news agency Petra quoted law enforcement sources as saying. At that time, the attacker was killed in police firing. An investigation has been started in this incident.

Eyewitnesses said that immediately after the shooting incident, the police surrounded the scene near the Israeli embassy, which is surrounded by tight security. Two witnesses said more policemen arrived in the Rabiyah area after the attack and ambulances were seen driving.

Rabiyah has become one of the centers of anti-Israel protests in Jordan. A number of large-scale protests have taken place in Jordan amid heightened anti-Israel sentiment in the region against Israeli forces' ongoing incursion into Palestinian Gaza. But they were peaceful.

A security source said the police have asked residents to stay in their homes as a search operation has begun to nab the criminals.

Many of Jordan's 1.2 million inhabitants are of Palestinian origin. After the birth of the state of Israel in 1948, many Palestinians fled to Jordan.

Jordan is bound by a peace treaty with Israel. This is not being taken well by many in the country. According to them, normalizing relations with Israel is tantamount to betraying the rights of their neighboring Palestinian brothers.
